short oil filter for small block windsor ford

Post by Jeff Hitchins »

Hi everyone

I have been asked a few times about the short oil filter on my Windsor motor so I thought it might be useful to others to post this up. (I was going to post this in the tech forum but it is locked so thought engine and drivetrain was the next best thing).

If you are trying to fit a Windsor 289, 302 or 351 (early or roller engine) into an 1928 - 1934 chassis you will soon find that the standard Z9 oil filter hits the chassis rails. But don't despair you have easy off the shelf options.

Z89A oil filter is about half the length of the Z9 filter - it is used in many applications including V8 Jeep Cherokee.

Z418 oil filter is even smaller again than the Z89A - again used in many common applications including V8 land cruisers.

Either of these standard filters will get you the clearance you need.

Having a very quiet Christmas Mont.
We are having a run on the 28th in the south of the state. He is welcome to come.
I might give him a call and see what he is up to.

I have a Z100 on the 34 at the moment, there is even less room in the T Model chassis, so I use a Baldwin filter in it. It is B7221, even shorter, but still quite large diameter, so I don’t think efficiency will be compromised.
I change oil and filter every 5,000 anyway, just to be sure.
Cheers,
Terry

That's going straight to the pool room!
