rust look a like paint on a fibre glass body

Post by garya54 »

Hi, I am considering painting my glass bodied 32 Ford in a rust finish (corten look a like type paint)
Has anyone had any experience painting a fibreglass body and chassis in this style?
Cheers, Gary

Hi Gary
I came very very close to doing my 32 this way and even had samples done
not one person I showed it to could pick the difference from an old rusty panel to a glass one until I turned it over to show them
the guy I worked with in the process is Rob at Metalcote in Wangara Perth WA
I will try and dig up some photos
there is a Australia wide company named axalotol who do the same thing
we have used this product on home theatres from time to time in the workshop
but it is allways hard trying to persuade clients to think outside the box and do something different

Hi Paul,
I had a look at the Axalotl rust paint, but they do not recommend it for external use and they recommend re-coating every 12 to 18 months, which would be a bit of a bummer.
All the products I have looked at so far do not seem to be suitable for either outdoor use or fibreglass. Gary

Do you think that the Porters stuff would be durable enough as an automotive finish?
I contacted them and they did not recommend it for use on a car, but they thought that it may have been done though.

Vinyl wraps look good, but have a limited life when exposed to the sun a lot. Even the best are only good for about 7 years
