Thanks for the encouragement fellas.
I have a clean grille shell & running boards now...been welding in captive nuts where the ol' ones fell out/rotted out.
The running boards after a blast aren't swiss cheese; more like the cheese grater!
So I got some patchwork quilting in steel to do now...

To get this far I consider a milestone. I dunno how blokes can do this for a living - it sure would keep you busy!! :D

Yes the boot has been changed at some time and the external hinges are off a Mini the father inlaw done it with the v8 and disc brake front 30 odd yrs back[/quote]
I think the ol' man had a good point. A 37 I checked out recently (with internal boot hinges) had the bootlid up, but it only opens to be level with the ground!
Not much fun accessing the boot when the car is lowered too! I'll have to see how mine hinges/turns out when the body goes back on.

watched a few "how to" vids on the weekend on lead wiping...is today's filler better than lead?

There is a reason why customising is a dying art,Lead is the answer . Dangerous old shit. Spend a little more time tapping it up and make sure you have correct support behind a join and your fine. Todays filler is more than up to the job just prepare the surface properly and use it sparingly. Great build thread mate keep at it .watching with great intrest. Good job on the running board brackets, look like they coulda grew there 8)

Thanks for the tip. I was gonna have a go at the lead wipe, on the running boards where the cancer dimples are.

I heard somewhere that filler today is a better bet, as it can expand/contract much better. I will try my best to bash the dings out as best as possible, as I don't really want to turn into a poly sculptor.

Take a look at Murray's vid where they use solder instead so you don't get the nasty side effects of lead.

Hi Gojeep...that's exactly the vid (part 1 & 2 ) I watched!!! lol. The stuff they used was 70/30 right? I didn't think you could get the ol' "white lead" that was used originally?

That's "body solder" right? Only coz my running boards have been blasted, I thought it might not be so hard to do, seeing as they're pretty clean now.

PS I like your workshop!! 8)
Hope your back is OK

I don't know much more about it than what is in those videos. I did read an article in Street Rodder as well about it last year some time as Eastwoods were selling a kit.

So RHS running board is patched & mounts added. Plus square tube coz it had the pox after blasting.
LHS is welded, have to add mount rails; then I'm off to visit the front guards

tubes are slotted so I can hose 'em out & fish oil later on

Well not much to look at just made the running boards all steel again instead of a mix of holes and cancer. New mount rails in underneath, and M8 square nuts made from a plate of 10mm steel..
So now the boards are bolted on after a ranex phosphor wipe for the steel.
Front guards picked from the shed today; had to twist off some old crap repairs inside the lower rear parts, I'll clean 'em up, send 'em off to the blasters, and then steel patch the ol' repairs done decades ago...

I'll patch the headlamp pods next

There's a crowd called Headwinds in USA that can do a headlamp bezel down to 7" H4 halogen inserts. I never had headlight glass or bezels with this car...

Sorry to burst any bubbles - but the rear is just sitting there - I havent moved on to that part yet. The cage will go, and 2 x square tubes will run L & R for the diff set up.
I will put H4 inserts into the headlamp pods, and adapt a Headwinds bezel to finish them off. Still investigating if I can have parkers and indicators all in the beam unit. Changing rules ATM makes it hard to confirm.
