460 into a 32 roadster

Post by wayno »

Gday im building a 32 roadster with a 460 bigblock and need some advice with the exhaust. Its real tight between the block and chassis rail but still want to run the headers through here so i can still fit a full hood and side covers. Im thinking of fitting some cast iron manifolds of an F truck and coating them but would prefer some custom made headers, does any body know of who can make some.
Cheers

Hi "wayno" and welcome to the forum. Might be a good idea to let people know what state you are from, so they can provide info.

is it the fomoco BBs that have mirrored header flange bolt pattern?

if so, you might be able to run the f truck headers in reverse, ie LH to RH and vice versa.

then a small u pipe on the end and run the exhaust under the headers and where it needs to go.
my favourite colour is chrome.

Pretty sure the location info wasn't in the original post. Maybe it was edited, maybe I just missed it.

As you are running a full bonnet then perhaps a show standard finish is not what you are looking for. That said you could have a go at making them yourself . Start with some header plates, which good exhaust shops can supply , a pair of collectors, some 90 deg bends and perhaps some donuts. You will also need a band saw and an oxy set. Do your arithmetic on costs and see what is going to work best for you.

Around 1980 well known rodder Les LAWRY stuffed 429CJ into a 30 sedan, all under the hood. I think he ran 2" primary pipes.

Just sent you a PM

Your not the first or the last person to do it.
There is a blown 32 roadster with 460 (black with single orange GT stripe) (VIC)
Yellow turtle deck T bucket with a NA 460 (VIC)
Orange 32 ford Tudor NA 460 with tunnel ram (NSW)

A 460 is about 2in wider then a Cleveland.

This is what the Ide's A coupe on 32 rails used to look like with headers inside the rails- tight! It now has zoomies.

I have a 429 in a 32 Roadster that I am trying to finish. I had to make my own headers to fit the way I wanted them to. I had to recess the engine about 4 to 6 inches to get proper clearance and enable me to keep the stock look of the car. I opted for no bonnet as I am able to do so here. Its a highboy so no fenders either, but I wanted to keep the exhaust within the frame rails as well maintain a good scrub line. I recon there are tube headers out there that could be a start. I made mine similar to the stock ones but used pre polished stainless tube.
