Spring steel for seats.
Goodaye all
Have to rebuild the seat springs in the Torana but where would l go in Melbourne for 3mm 1/8 diameter spring steel?
Also the zigzag springs
Luckerly l have enough left to copy.
PS should see the bases after a citric acid bath

I got rid of a pair of VP Crummydore buckets and they used zig zag springs, still easy to find

You can use carbon steel piano wire for the straight pieces. You could make a jig to bend the zig zag pieces from the same material.
People who think they know it all, bother those of us that do.

What about carving up an old mattress? Are they made of similar stuff?

Re: Spring steel for seats.
Hi
Muddy,s right, find an old mattress. All around the edge is 3 mm Spring steel. Back in the 80,s one of the trimmers asked me to heat up some Spring steel out of a mattress and bend it to match the broken zigzag samples he gave me. I warmed it up with an oxy to dull red, bent to shape and quenched in water. He told me he has repaired seats like this for years and never had a problem. He often used the coil springs out of mattresses to build up seat cushions on some of the vintage cars he used to trim.
Cheers GT.

I only thought of a mattress, as people I know lately have told me they are a pain to dispose of. So you could probably find one for nix, and have a load of wire to play with.

Hi Bruce, sloper wrote: Also the zigzag springs
I am fairly sure I have a few of these around here somewhere which I understand are from the HK, HT, HG Holden era if you are interested. If so, you are welcome to them. Let me know and I can have a look.

It has to be easier to get some springs from some old seats rather than fabricate to fix your current seats?

Bruce, what about a conversation with your local furniture upolsterer. Some older domestic seating had this type of springing.
Remember this life is a test. If it had been a real life you would have received further instructions on where to go and what to do!!!!!

Re: Spring steel for seats.
I know this is a very old thread, but I had a similar issue a while back. I went to my local mattress recycler (in Geelong) and they said I could take as much edge wire as I wanted. I ended up taking a whole mattress frame, I've used quite a few of the springs and most of the edge wire. I will need to go back and get some more soon!

Whelan springs in Corporate Boulevard Bayswater. I noticed similar stuff on their counter on Friday when I went down there. They are making a replacement for one of my busted boot lid torsion bar springs in our 66 Fairlane.
