i had one in my first regoed car was an xp sedan i got told it was setup wrong you had to push down and forward for first and if you pulled it back to quick you got reverse . got used of it and only stuffed one gearbox 
always got told by a friend it should of been down and back 1st gear push forward slowly and let it popup and push foward into 2nd then backwards for 3rd
