Black Shadow FJ Holden number 1

Post by WildVioletFJ »

Here is the Alby Olver built Show stopper and race car showing the condition it was recently found in, in Mount Martha Victoria.
It was raced in the mid to late 1960's by Alby Olver with a Grey engine and again in the 1970's by the guy who bought it off Alby called "Garry" with a Red 186 engine.
It was also drag raced at Calder in the mid 1980's with the Turbo charged 3.3 blue motor by a subsequent owner.
It has been painted Purple but still has the original body built by Alby Olver in 1965. ( It may have had a new drivers side rear quarter fitted).
A number of items confirm it is the ex Alby Olver Black Shadow show stopper, they are as follows:
The original body with nearly all panels (except one) including witness holes and marks, welds, recesses and the black paint under the purple paint identifying it. (Right rear quarter panel replacement).
Original parts and panels, received from the previous owner, to be kept for a future restoration and repaint in BLACK!
The welded in gaurd flutes - ex Alby Olver.
The full welded FJ grill surround - ex Alby Olver.
The Plymouth / Desoto headlight surrounds fitted by Alby Olver.
The hand formed and welded in floor pans - ex Alby Olver.
The red rear seats - ex Alby Olver, covered over the top white by the second owner "Garry".
The white front bucket seats - ex "Garry" second owner fitted after Alby Olver.
The 1970's pin striped diff - ex "Garry" second owner.
The red motor running gear up dated by the second owner "Garry" in the 1970's to race at Calder park, the engine of which was then updated to a 3.3 blue motor with a Garret To4 Turbo charger in the mid 1980's by a subsequent owner.
The witness marks and welds in underside of boot lid show of the recess panel made by second owner "Garry".
The witness marks in roof made by second owner "Garry".
The witness marks on lower pillars made by Alby Olver.
The witness marks on the rear of dash panel show where the Alby Olver gauges once were, the hole now welded up.
There are more smaller items that helped confirm the authenticity of the car as well as document evidence and previous owners and history.
I hope viewers get a kick out of the following photos and enjoy the car for what it is and its incredible show winning history and racing history.
It may be currently painted purple and be turbo charged but its still undeniably the Alby Olver " BLACK SHADOW FJ NUMBER 1" from 1965.
The Black Shadow is not dead! Its alive and well!
Its just got a different coat of paint and an updated engine.
How many other old customs and rods are out there in changed colours or updated form waiting to be discovered??

Pic was out of Custom Rodder from 69.
A lot has changed on the car over the years.
Shame the bonnet is no longer on the car.
If it wasn't for the vents and parts of the grill, It would be hard to pick it as the same car.
Any pics from the 60's or build shots you can share?
Regards
Alex

.

Its not hard to pick it from the original car.
It has all the Alby Olver floor panels under it, hole on the passenger side rear where the arials were, witness holes in dash where Alby put the gauges, original Alby rear seat trim under the new trim, The white interior installed by Garry Laird, the original pinstripes done on the diff by Garry Laird, the original Desoto headlight surrounds fitted by Alby, the gaurd flutes were welded in by Alby.
And the bonnet is with the car! Just not fitted at present.
The only real things externally that have changed are wheels, paint and de-chroming, all of which are easily fixed.
Thank you .
