windsor starter motor question

Post by lucky_damo »

This starter is supposed to fit my 302 windsor v8 but the mark on the tape is where it hits the flex plate. Its an auto with 157 tooth flex plate. any ideas ?

Is there a difference between a manual box one and an auto ,I fitted an early C4 and a 157 flex plate to my cleveland and used one of those small starters ,all fitted perfect

in the days of xr/xy the starter for a manual car was the same as for an auto...BUT... you needed a factory spacer to use it in a manual....
from memory i think it spaced it out about 3/8 of an inch........yep....i got caught....one brand new starter down the drain
cheers joe

Were you actually able to bolt it up , or did the flywheel/starter not allow this ?
You may have the wrong sandwich plate between eng and trans ?

Have you counted the teeth on the flywheel to confirm it is 157 ?

I think they came in 157 and 164

Good Luck

Tooth count on the flex plate doesn't matter to the starter .
But you must have the correct bellhousing and sandwich plate to suit the flexplate .

If the bolt holes did not line up for starters [excuse pun] ,the starter might be for some other application . If it was intended for the particular application this should not even been an issue . Fyi A Clevo starter will fit older 289/302 Windsors . Re jig the wiring to cater for the on starter solenoid . Currently one is still in use after 10 years with no problems . Required drilling out the thread on one of the bell housing attaching holes .

Thanks for that . I have a Clevo starter in a 66 Mustang Coupe that is auto . Also have a 66 Manual Stang still with the original starter . And of course a Clevo starter waiting in the wings for this once the original gives up the ghost .
Any clues as to identifying the different starters ? Manual/Auto

Thanks Joe and Scott . I guess this is due to the manual flywheel and drive plate for the auto having the ring gear in a different position for/aft with regard to the bell housing/block mating surfaces ? .
