Goodaye all

Had time to check out whats going on.
CAM timing is correct ignition timing is correct.
Still no real compression.
So NEW engine time.

So now l need a 1953-63 235 engine and any bits.

Wouldnt mind the 235 l had when l was a teenager, sold it in a 1952 chev ute in Croydon back in 1987
(Yes l needed the money, broke newlyweds building a house)

Same trouble with the 206 in my 36 Chev.
No or little compression. Pulled off the rocker cover and side plate.. 6 or 7 stuck valves... And a bent pushrod.
I really didn't want to use the 206 anyway. They really are like a big heavy grey motor. Except not as "powerful".
1UZ's fit nice...
Yeah. I've changed my signature. The old one was out of date...

Timing gear lets go at 55mph, I'd put money on bent valves. The crank keeps turning but the camshaft doesn't, leaving some valves in the open position. Up comes the piston and bang, instant bent valve or punctured piston. Same as when a timing chain in late model lets go or belt breaks from not being replaced at mileage interval.
Shirley you must be joking? I'm not, and don't call me Shirley.

The Chev 6 valves should not hit the piston if they are open and the piston comes up (same as a Holden red). I have driven the Holdens a couple of times when the fibre timing gear has let go, and the only damage is the timing gear (run- free engine). If a valve hits the piston, it's because of a busted valve spring or keeper.
.....insert witty comment here.....

The Holden grey motor is the same - no interference between piston and valves when the timing gear lets go.

Goodaye all

Thats right pistons cant hit the valves on these things.

The 261 is clean and l will be starting the assembly today.
New rings and bearings.
l think the truck only did a couple of 1000 miles before it was retired, no gunge, no scale.

Now convinced it was a parts block being so clean and no engine number.
Rockers need replacing but l have a few sets here to check. (Big grooves)
Will post pics as l go.

Ordered the big Rochester carby kit from the US, no one here in Oz has the correct one.

Havent taken the old 216 out yet.
The 261 will be dressed up to look like a 216.

Oh the 261 had a fibre timeing gear, had a new aluminium one sitting there.

My father would be rolling over in his grave over these changes.
We wont talk about how cheap duel headers are for theses now.

Goodaye all

Well found the problem.

The person who rebuilt the motor years ago put dome pistons in it, no it wasnt me l purchased it rebuilt very cheaply.
Bent valves ever so slightly.
Sitting in the garage roof is a reco 37-39 head suitable for dome pistons, DOH.

But the fresh 261 is going in this weekend

Goodaye all

Just a update, the 261 is in and tuned.

Fitted the oil pressure guage line on the upside of the rockers, figured with a 30lb lower presure would be better.
Guage is slow on start up but goes to 30lb eventuly, hot idle sits at 25 so thats ok.

Pulls away in second gear and no changing down for any hill so far, just keeps accelerating.

Used the 261 inlet manifold and 216 exhuast, no heating as they dont match, blanked off the carb heater.
Also went back to the Stomberg over the Rochester.
The stromberg has a smaller throat but does flow more going by the specs
Easier to get parts for too.

Could do with some better breathing, set of headers and twin manifold maybe.

Oh and it still looks old, center post rocker cover and adapter plate for the ealier water pump, it would take a keen eye to pick it.

Got a problem selecting second when its hot, which it didnt have before so l need to work on that.
