El Cheapo Build

Post by Big G »

I have just got home a start to my next project. The plan is to build a low cost rpu hotrod, all of this I have done before so hopefully it won't be too hard,
The chassis is a 1927 Hudson and at this stage I plan to leave the front and rear as parallell springs. The chassis is straight as a die and looks very sturdy. I have a 27 Dodge cowl and rear section off a tourer and will use this with new doors.
I pick up the donor V8 1991 Fairlane next Saturday, it is a 200k country car with aftermarket extractors. Every part will be used.
I also have a 1956 F100 disk brake front end which is a bit wide for the chassis spring mounts

The chassis is solid the Hudson was a 9 seater so made a bit stronger it's nearly 200 mm depth in the middle.

The cowl has 2 small dents but only surface rust, the back section I may not use asit has the usual sloping back.

The grill I haven't decided on yet, I have a 1990's jag grill which inverted may suit in a track rod front.

Your build sounds and looks awesome Big G 8)

I am keen to this progress too - it is refreshing to see something different to the norm

I am still setting up my small shed so everything has a place and easy to get to. I can't do much until I get the Fairlane home next Saturday and also I have to find the engineer that has been recommended to me. But in saying that, I can cut off the hanging pieces and bits on the chassis I don't need. Everything on the chassis is perfect, no damage so I will use the body brackets and hoping to use the engine mounts which are about where the Ford ones would be.

Should be fun to follow.

None of my builds ever stayed on track cost wise.

THat is why I have bought most of the costly parts, I don't know if I will finish it but I am retired, 70yrs young and have a partime job, that along with a good wife who likes that I am active. Besides, I can always get my money back if I don't fiinsh it.

I have finished cleaning up the chassis and have left the 3 original cross members and will get it sand blasted in a week.
I have been working on the body frame, it's only tack welded and I will leave the full welding to someone who knows what they are doing.

Next will be the doors

I have every intention of working on the car every day even if it's just for an hour. The only thing that will slow me down is money but I have everything from a donor V8 Fairlane which will be used.
