Planishing machines, does anyone here use one?

Post by steve the ford guy »

Found this, seems the only one available locally, are they any good? Can't remember anyone here ever talking about them :?:

Thought it would be nice to have one for planishing metal after viewing this=

That is the one sold through Hare and Forbes and even has the same part number.

I have used one about 5 years ago when I was first starting out at a metal meet. Seemed easy enough to use but too noisy for where I live. Not used it enough to give you good feedback on it.

I have used them a few times and they seem to work well. Like lots of things, the same outcome can be achieved using different methods. There is a company on insta named Tin Man Garage that has the best ones that I have seen (but never used theirs).

I agree with GJ about noise. They make a piercing sound and furthermore run off compressed air.

There are more versatile tools imo

Looking at the video it looks much faster than swinging a planishing hammer to bring metal up
Can't be any noisier than my oft used 125mm angle grinder, knocking metal up is incredibly tedious so anything that saves my time is worth trying

I have a Hare and Forbes one as pictured, but I haven’t tried it yet, need to get my chassis done first before body work..

My brother uses one almost daily, and recommended a web site to me with plans for building your own, for less than $100 in materials. I ordered the plans, and will be making one. Neighbors be damned, I'm only out there making noise between 7AM and 9PM on the weekends, and periodically after work. They don't think twice about having loud parties till midnight with live Mariachi bands.

I agree Newbee and 'hudson nut'/Dany.
I want to use whatever speeds up getting good results and saves effort.

Regarding noise, One new years eve the neighbours up and down the street partied till early morning, next morning I got out early and fired up the lawn mower, as you'd expect the neighbours had hangovers from all the celebrating. My mowing made them sooo cranky
I think this guy Extra Machinery (if your in Australia) has the cheapest price, even less than Hare & Forbes or ebay
