I remember Bulleen, Burwood and Croydon out in the East of Melb. And not far too the North was the Olympic Twin in Preston, all gone . Coburg drive in further north still operational . Bygone era that was, with white overcalled blokes with torches tapping on the fogged up windows of vehicles scattered around after most patrons had left  Then of course the jump start battery trolley when valve car radios or electric car heaters were left on too long  . Starting the vehicle to use vacuum wipers on the odd occasion to view was also a PITA. Just had to tell some sheila that you would run out of petrol if that kept up. .

Bass Hill drive in, managed to survive until 2007. Still one open out here at Blacktown. Kids love it.

Ahh yes.
Us kiddies in their PJ's ready for bed as soon as we got home. Bucket of hot chips smothered in tomato sauce.
Wednesday night was the favourite -Western night. Always had 2 great westerns on.
Whole family went usually Dad and two sons in the front. Mum and sister in the back. FJ, then Cusso.
Later, my brother had a '63 Chev. 4 mates across the front!
But the best was the wagons and panno's reversed up the ramp and watch the movie (maybe) out the tailgate (on the customary foam matress). Great in Summer!

But... They're back! At least here in Canberra...
probably due to "Covert" 19! (I call it Covert 19 because of all the crap that's going on while we are distracted...)

Here's some inks: https://majuraparkshopping.com.au/event ... -pictures/
https://hercanberra.com.au/city/film-th ... s-weekend/
and
https://hercanberra.com.au/city/film-th ... -canberra/

Very popular at this stage. Just remains to be seen how they weather Canberra's winter nights!

"Dirty Dancing" to set the mood?
Yeah. I've changed my signature. The old one was out of date...
What if climate change IS a hoax, and we make a better world for nothing?

Cheers GT.

The Sunset Drive-In opened on 28th July 1955. Name changed to Maribyrong Hoyts Drive-In in 1967 when Hoyts took over. The drive-in closed in 1990, a year after the Highpoint Cinema opened across the road. The site was demolished(date unknown?), is now a Homemaker centre.

Located in the west Melbourne suburb of Maidstone. The Roxy Theatre was opened by Kirby’s Theatres chain on 18th May 1943 with James Cagney in “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. Seating was on a stadium plan, with a raised stepped section at the rear, instead of an overhanging balcony. There were 582 seats in the stalls and 182 in the raised section. Kirby’s Theatres (later to become Village Theatres) were still the operators when it closed on 5th March 1958.

It has since been demolished and a service station now operates on the site.

I remember seeing Popeye at the Northland drive ins as a kid. Was shut down before I got my license in 89. Went to the Preston/Coburg drive in a few times over the years, but not in the last 20 I guess. Different generation, but we did commit some shenanigans at various times :D

Whilst on Special Duties, went to the Preston drive in with the police undercover car, HX with no grill and black wheels. We watched ChoirBoys a movie about Cops. Everytime the movie showed a scene we could relate too, on went the siren !!
